PAINTING THE FIGURE IN OIL

When: Saturday, May 3, 2008 (9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.)

Where: The Center for Contemporary Arts (220 Cypress Street, Abilene, TX.) (MAP)

What: An exploration in painting the figure from life in oil**

How much: $45 class fee (includes a light working lunch*) + $10 model fee

How much for students / military: 50% off the above (for a grand total of $27.50) (Ages 17 and up.)

*Catering provided by McKay’s bakery!
** If you do not own oil paints, feel free to study with acrylic paints or pastels.
Note: This class is limited to 25 participants.

Supplies

Suggested Colors for Oil (or Acrylic) (bold colors are the necessary minimum requirement, any major brand acceptable)

Titanium White
Cadmium Yellow Light
Yellow Ochre
Raw Sienna
Cadmium Red Light
Cadmium Orange
Alizarin Crimson
Burnt Sienna
Burnt Umber
Cobalt Blue
Viridian (or Sap Green)
Ivory Black

A palette of some kind (glass or wooden is best)
2-4 Canvas Panels or Stretched Canvas (16x20, 18x24 or 20x24 with a medium tooth is best)
Filbert Bristle Brushes (number 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10)
A Portable Easel (there are a few easels available for use at the Center - on a first come, first served basis)
Paper towels or rags
Odorless mineral spirits will be provided for you, but you need to bring a brush washer / container for your brushes
A portable table (or a TV tray) to hold your supplies (optional)
A note pad and pen or pencil

for Pastel

Sennelier or Unison Soft Pastels (A set of 40+ or Portrait Colors are best)
6 Sheets of Wallis Museum Grade or Canson Mi-Teintes Paper (11x14 or larger)
Drawing Board with Clips to secure paper
Vine Charcoal (Charcoal Pencils optional) and a Kneaded Eraser
A Portable Easel (there are a few easels available for use at the Center - on a first come, first served basis)
Paper towels or rags (Aluminum foil also makes a great "tray" to catch pesky dust.)
Odorless mineral spirits will be provided for you, but you need to bring a brush and a container for your brush (if you wish to apply a wash to your pastel drawing)
Workable Spray Fixative (optional)(I use Lascaux, but other brands work fine.)
A portable table (or a TV tray) to hold your supplies (optional)
A note pad and pen or pencil

9:45 - 10 a.m. _________________Setup and Orientation

10 a.m. - 12 p.m. ______________Demo: Painting the Figure in Oil from Life

12 p.m. - 12:30 p.m.____________ Easel Setup and the arrival of lunch

12 p.m. - 1:30 p.m._____________ Group observation and painting of the model

1:30 p.m. - 3:20 p.m.___________ Continued painting, Optional Critique and one-on-one dialogue

3:20 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.___________ Clean up and conclusions
